A trick to getting rid of the stress in your life.

We all have our issues.

Mine is that I often try to do too much.

I dive into everything and then feel like I’m drowning.

I say to my loved ones: “I’m doing so much, but I’m not doing anything well.”

Does this sound familiar?

If so, I love this word: jettison.

Jettison definition: To throw or drop something from an aircraft or a ship; to get rid of something as superfluous or encumbering.

If your ship is sinking, it’s time to throw something off.

Once, a few years ago, I was on the phone with a good friend.  I was complaining to him: “Uuuuggg, I have rehearsal tonight for class, I am coming down with a cold, I’ve been up since 5:30 this morning, and I’m way behind with work.”

In a breezy voice, my friend said, “So, skip rehearsal.”

“What?!” I gasped, “I can’t possibly!  I’ve already committed!”

“Do you think you are so important that their lives will fall apart if you back out?,” he teased.

I considered what he said.  Gosh, it would feel so nice to put on my pajamas, make a cup of tea, and settle in to getting some work done.  But could I really do that?

Of course I could.

I called my scene partners and guess what?  They were relieved.  They had stuff to do too, and we settled on meeting a few nights later.

I learned an important lesson that day.

Jettison BEFORE the drowning starts.

You’ll get it done, just maybe not today.

Life will go on, and your ship will move better and faster.

Let’s jettison and maybe we’ll even get to smell some roses when we do.
