Every 4th of July, my family and I go to a Family Camp in Vermont.
Our friends tease us mercilessly – “Ooooo, is it time for FAMILY CAMP??!!”
They picture us on the set of DIRTY DANCING…
…in a remote location with a lot of people wearing khaki shorts and playing badminton.
Full disclosure – they aren’t THAT far off.
But here is why I keep the tradition alive every year…
…THE CAMP IS TEN MILES AWAY FROM ANY WIFI.
Which royally sucks for the first few days as we all detox and look at each other like, “Is this as bad for you as it is for me? Seriously, I feel dizzy.”
But then I acclimate to the lack of technology and I start to feel good.
Like REALLY F#*KING good.
I was there last week and I had about 10 massive, mind-blowing epiphanies.
I felt inspiration I haven’t felt in months.
I slept better than I have in weeks.
I felt clear and open.
My favorite epiphany was this:
“WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME HOW EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE IS GOING, IF I JUST SMILE AND SAY ‘GREAT, THANK YOU – IT’S GOING GREAT’… I SUDDENLY FEEL A LOT BETTER.”
I realized that “being honest” isn’t sharing my every waking concern and worry with every single person I encounter.
And guess what?
If you have food on your table, a roof over your head, one or two really good friends, and a
body that is healthy enough to get you around, YOUR LIFE IS GOING GREAT!
So here’s the thing, my little ambitious actor friend…
…you don’t have to go to Family Camp in Vermont for a week.
You don’t even have to jump off the grid.
But EVERY artist (THAT’S YOU) should hit the reset button every once in a while by disconnecting from technology…for a bit.
Try it… and LET THE EPIPHANIES FLOOD IN.
